Our Union
We are Local 70008 with the National Health Union (NHU) - recently merged with Union of Environment Workers (UEW) to become Union of Health and Environment Workers (UHEW) a component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Local 70008 is a not-for-profit organization whose primary purpose is to protect the interests, rights and privileges of Local 70008 members' employed at Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada (Health Portfolio) in the Ottawa-Gatineau Area.
The Alliance is one of Canada's largest unions and within it our Local, of more than 3,000 members, is one of the largest. Our members work in a wide range of occupations within the federal Health Portfolio.
ORGANIZATION
Our Local has an Elected Executive which consists of a President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and four Chief Shop Stewards.
It is the duty of your elected officials to represent and seek fair treatment, respect, improved working conditions and a safe work place for members of the various occupational groups they represent.
These elected officials are volunteers. There are also non-elected volunteers, throughout the Health Portfolio, acting as Stewards, Building Representatives, and providing assistance to the Local.
WHY THE LOCAL?
It is at the Local level that unions are first organized and make it possible for members to have their say.
Our Local members establish our own Local bylaws and decide on the Local portion of the dues structure and elect our Local officers at an annual general membership meeting.
Our Local decides its own course of action in accordance with the Alliance constitution, policies and practices.
Our Local creates a union presence in the work place, makes the union real for members and is something we can all get involved in.
